President Piñera responds to the crisis in Nicaragua: "President Ortega should resume the National Dialogue Assembly and the work of its committees"

On Sunday, President of Chile Sebastián Piñera “intensely and indignantly” condemned the loss of over 350 lives in Nicaragua.

He said, "President Ortega should resume the National Dialogue Assembly and the work of its committees, end this violence and loss of life, and seek broad and inclusive agreements to restore freedoms, democracy, respect and peace in Nicaragua."

Piñera added, "This requires an immediate end to the violent repression and arbitrary detention of those participating in these protests and guaranteeing the right to freedom of expression and the right to integrity and safety."

"The international community, particularly in our region through bodies such as the Group of Lima, could and should make a significant contribution to achieving these urgent and necessary objectives," he said. Piñera asked Minister of Foreign Affairs Roberto Ampuero to raise this issue at the II Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union, which begins tomorrow in Brussels.
