President Piñera visits Singapore: “Joining the Asia-Pacific world is of paramount importance and fundamental for Chile”

During his visit to the Asian country to participate in the 33rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, President Piñera highlighted the bilateral meetings held on his first day and emphasized the importance of this region for Chile.

On his first day in Singapore, and as part of his visit to Asia and Oceania, President Sebastián Piñera reported a positive outcome of the bilateral meetings held with world leaders participating in the ASEAN summit and commented on the importance for Chile to integrate into this region.

“Joining the Asia-Pacific world, which is the most dynamic region with the highest growth rate in the world, is of paramount importance and fundamental for Chile. This is with a single purpose in mind: to create more opportunities, improve the quality of life of Chileans, create more and better jobs, improve wages and attract foreign investment”, the President said at Merlion Park.

On Wednesday, President Piñera met with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, then with the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and also holding a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Lim Jock Hoi.

Winding up his day, the President attended a gala dinner offered by the Prime Minister of Singapore in the context of the ASEAN summit, where he was accompanied by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, the Chairwoman of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and Myanmar State Counselor and Noble Peace Prize Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, among others.

“We’ve had a very good meeting with the ten member countries of ASEAN, an association that represents the most dynamic region of the world economy and that is expanding”, the President added.

This Thursday, President Piñera will meet with the President of Singapore, Halimah Yacob and visit the cyber security research and development center, iTrust, as well as the NEWater treatment plant. On Saturday, the President will head to Papua, New Guinea to join the annual summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC).
