The President of Chile on World Environment Day: “The world needs Chile for the tremendous potential it has in non-conventional renewable energy, for its coast, copper, lithium and electromobility”
The President highlighted the enactment of the Framework Law on Climate Change, and gave details on the implications of the regulations.
The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric Font, participated this morning in the commemoration of World Environment Day, which took place in Bosque Santiago, part of the Metropolitan Park in Santiago. He was accompanied by Environment Minister Maisa Rojas.
Speaking at the event, the President stated that “the world needs Chile for the tremendous potential it has in non-conventional renewable energy, for its coast, copper, lithium and electromobility. Therefore, we have no time to waste. You also know that our country is one of the most affected by the consequences of the climate crisis.”
The President also gave details about the Framework Law on Climate Change, which was enacted in late May and will come into force next week. The regulation recognizes the need to reduce emissions of atmospheric pollutants, encourages the development of scientific research associated with the climate crisis, and determines the carbon neutrality goal for 2050.
On this last point, President Boric indicated that he hopes to meet this goal “before 2050, so we can’t relax. We have to be the first in stepping up and leading this process from Chile for the world.”
He also highlighted the approval of the Escazú Agreement, adding that “we have good news not only for those who are listening to us today, but also for the entire environment, the ecosystem that surrounds us.”
The President was also accompanied by Minister Secretary General of the Government Camila Vallejo, Defense Minister Maya Fernández, Transport Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz, and undersecretaries, members of Congress and representatives from academia and civil society.
