President Piñera holds meeting with WHO and PAHO authorities to assess progress in combating the COVID-19 pandemic

The virtual meeting examined progress with the vaccination program in Chile and the world, the importance of virus sequencing, traceability and border controls to contain the progress of COVID-19, and several other topics.

President Piñera held a video-conference meeting Thursday with senior executives from the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, to evaluate world-wide progress and policies to combat COVID-19.

The Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, Michael Ryan, the Director of the PAHO Health Emergencies Department, Ciro Ugarte, and PAHO's representative in Chile, Fernando Leanes, participated in the virtual meeting, which the President led from Lima, where he was visiting.

The President was accompanied from Santiago by the Health Minister, Enrique Paris, the Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza, and the Undersecretary of Health Care Networks, Alerto Dougnac.

The meeting examined progress with the vaccination program in Chile and the world, the importance of virus sequencing and traceability, the world-wide expansion of the Delta variant, reopening measures in other countries, and border controls to contain the spread of COVID-19. At the meeting, the WHO expressed appreciation of the support provided by Chile in supplying information to combat the pandemic.

This was one of a series of meetings that President Piñera has held with leading health authorities in the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Germany and Israel to evaluate the world-wide COVID-19 situation and the best approaches to combating this disease.
