President Piñera commences visit and highlights Chile’s close ties with Israel and Palestine: “We are going to reach agreements that are very important to Chile and the Chilean people”

President Piñera will hold meetings with President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel and President Mahmoud Abbas in Palestine.

On the Mount of Olives and with the city of Jerusalem in the background, President Sebastián Piñera highlighted the agreements due to be signed with Israel and Palestine during his official visit to both countries.

President Piñera will sign agreements with Israel on solar energy, irrigation, cybersecurity, technological transfer and the Digital Hospital initiative. In Palestine, Chile will sign a cultural agreement and a medical cooperation agreement, as well as creating a customs code.

“We are going to reach agreements that are very important to Chile and the Chileans,” explained President Piñera.

Asked by the press about the Chilean embassy in Israel, the President responded, “the Chilean Embassy is going to remain in Tel Aviv. Chile defends and supports a two-state solution: Israel and Palestine as autonomous, free, independent, democratic states with agreed upon, legitimate and secure borders.”

President Piñera began his activities this Tuesday with a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. He toured the facility, which presents the tragic events through victims’ testimonies, objects and possessions. While there, he placed a floral wreath and expressed his hope that “this memory makes us always value peace, respect for human rights, as well as wise and healthy coexistence between peoples.”
