The committee chaired by Sports Minister Alexandra Benado, and made up of Acting Director of the National Sports Institute Israel Castro, Senator Sebastián Keitel, Member of Congress Marisela Santibáñez, and President of the Circle of Sports Journalists Danilo Díaz, gave the National Sports Award 2021 this morning to María Francisca Mardones Sepúlveda.

Sports Minister Benado was tasked with telling the para-athlete that she had received the highest recognition given by the Chilean State to both conventional and para-athletes. The award recognizes the achievements that Chilean athletes have accomplished over the previous calendar year. During the event, Minister Benado stated, “today is a very special day. I would like to congratulate María Francisca Mardones, whom the National Sports Award committee has selected to win this prize.”

She added, “María Francisca, we hug and congratulate you. You are a tremendous woman and athlete. We believe that you are absolutely deserving of this award for your achievements and your sporting merits, for having won the gold medal in Tokyo, and for having set a world record. We congratulate you once more and we look forward to seeing you shine at the 2023 Santiago Games.”

The National Sports Award 2021 winner won the gold medal and set the world record in the Women’s Shot Put F54 at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which took place in 2021.
