Chile reaches agreement with Google to have the first transoceanic underwater cable

Humboldt will allow Chile to digitally connect South America with Asia and Oceania.

Chile has taken a huge and historic step forward at the digital level, thanks to the implementation of the Humboldt underwater cable. Our country will thus become the first digital connection point between South America and Asia and Oceania.

It will be the first transoceanic fiber optic cable in the world. It will turn our country into a Digital Hub, and a leader in this area at the regional level.

“This cable consolidates Chile’s position as the center of digital activity in South America. It will open opportunities for new industries, jobs and better working and living conditions for thousands of people,” Gabriel Boric, President of Chile.

Characteristics of the Humboldt underwater cable

The Humboldt cable has come about thanks to an agreement with the multinational Google. It will have an extension of more than 14,000 kilometers.

The agreement will allow the deployment of an underwater fiber optic cable between Chile and Australia, thus generating an optimal connection with the Asia-Pacific.

Among its advantages, it will allow for more robust and stable internet connections, and the exchange of scientific data between these areas of the world.

President Gabriel Boric, who led the presentation ceremony, highlighted that “this type of work reflects the deep integrative vocation that our country has, as well as our ability to be a bridge through which to generate knowledge and connect different realities.”

According to reports, the construction of this underwater cable will begin in 2025. It is expected to be in operation in the last quarter of 2026.
