Chile is elected member of the United Nations Human Rights Council

Chile has been elected with 144 votes to occupy a seat in the Latin America and Caribbean group for the 2023-2025 term. This was the highest vote in the region.

The United Nations General Assembly today elected Chile as a member of the Human Rights Council, with 144 votes. Our country will occupy a seat in the Latin America and Caribbean group for the 2023-2025 term. This was the highest vote in the region.

Chile thanks all UN member states that supported this candidacy. Our country has been given the honor of actively working from a prominent position to promote and protect human rights, and to foster peace, democracy, the rule of law and sustainable development. These are all fundamental components of our public policies and our foreign policy.

We understand this appointment not only as a great honor granted to us by the international community, but also as a great responsibility towards all those who expect the Human Rights Council to be an effective instrument to ensure respect for the principles that guide its mission.

At the same time, we believe that it recognizes our country’s active participation in the multilateral arena, in mechanisms and resolutions aimed at preventing torture and at promoting the right to truth, justice and reparation. It also acknowledges our promotion and protection of the rights of children and adolescents, the rights of women, the rights of LGBTIQ+ people, and the rights of indigenous peoples, particularly against violence and discrimination.
