For the seventh year in a row, Chile has been named South America’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination. At the most recent World Travel Awards for South America, the country earned its seventh trophy, maintaining the top position for tourism in the region.
This was not the only award the country received. Chile was also named Most Romantic Destination for the Atacama Desert. The driest desert in the world, it spans the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Atacama and Coquimbo. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Chile has earned the distinction in the popularly-known ‘Oscars of Tourism’.
Tourism Undersecretary José Luis Uriarte highlighted the country’s latest achievement and noted, “for the seventh consecutive year we have been chosen as the Leading Adventure Tourism Destination in South America and for the fourth as the Most Romantic Destination for the Atacama Desert. This recognition is a tremendous incentive for the sector, which for the past year and a half has persevered in the face of an unprecedented crisis. Little by little we are resuming activities and awards such as this not only provide a much-needed boost, but also allow us to highlight the many attractions we have to offer, essential to meeting the demands of tourists post pandemic.”
National Tourism Service (SERNATUR) National Director Andrea Wolleter said that “maintaining our role as leaders in South America gives us an opportunity to stay at the forefront of tourists’ minds, especially as peak season approaches. It is a great opportunity to increase awareness among travelers from around the world who are looking for open spaces and romantic destinations, precisely why we are recognized within South America. Now that we can travel throughout Chile, we are very happy to once again invite tourists to enjoy our country.”
