Protocol will allow development of green hydrogen industry in Magallanes

President has signed agreement for public-private alliances to expand the industry.

Through a five-point tripartite agreement between the Central Government, the Regional Government and the trade association of companies linked to the green hydrogen industry, a work route has been established to consolidate the development of green fuel in Chile’s Magallanes Region. It also promotes employability, productive chaining and the development of infrastructure and innovation.

The signing of the agreement was headed by President Gabriel Boric in the city of Punta Arenas. It commits to a series of actions for the growth of the green hydrogen (H2V) industry in the region.

It establishes the goal of creating quality jobs for the region, in addition to promoting the acquisition of different inputs and services connected to the offer of local suppliers.

It also commits to promoting the industrialization of the Chilean economy and the creation of the first Technological Center for Applied Research in H2V in the region, the tender for which will be held in 2024.

The alliance was developed with a view to consolidating progress towards carbon-neutrality and growth through the generation of quality jobs. It does not, however, ignore the fact that said progress is driven by a productive development that is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.

“With this agreement, we are preparing ahead of time, ensuring, for example, that companies can study how things are going ahead of time, what type of skills and what type of workers will be needed in the future. And when we have information about the details of the companies’ engineering projects, we will then be able to make plans with universities, with technical training centers, with professional centers, so that we get the most out of this industry locally,” stated Energy Minister Diego Pardow.

“When a country decides to pursue the development of an industry, as Chile is now, it is necessary to do it with the participation of everyone. With the State, the private sector, communities, state companies and local governments, to put everything on the table that is required for proper and successful development. As a ministry, we are responsible for how to study, arrange, generate and build the necessary infrastructure to enable these economic and social activities,” explained Public Works Minister Jessica López.
