President Piñera participated in the 5th Extraordinary Meeting of PROSUR Presidents

The objective of the virtual meeting was to discuss the coordination between PROSUR countries to address the pandemic and the vaccination process that is currently underway.

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, participated in the Fifth Extraordinary Meeting of Presidents of member countries of the Forum for the Progress of South America (PROSUR) this morning. The main purpose of the virtual meeting was to discuss the coordination between the PROSUR member countries to address the pandemic and the vaccination process that is currently underway.

This coordination is taking place in the context of the efforts being made by the regional organization (created in 2019 by Chile and Colombia), to unite and strengthen international coordination in order to respond to the pandemic.

During the meeting, the organization addressed Chile's proposal to promote a global treaty for responding to global pandemics, which would strengthen coordination between states and provide more effective tools to the World Health Organization.

President Piñera also made clear the need to discuss the migration issues affecting the region in the next PROSUR summit, in order to address them together.

Heads of state and high-ranking officials from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay participated in the meeting. Representatives from the Pan American Health Organization, Inter-American Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund were also present. President Piñera was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Andrés Allamand and Health Minister Enrique Paris.
