President Piñera holds video conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel

The two leaders addressed the progress of vaccination against COVID-19 and cooperation between both countries to combat the pandemic. They also analyzed economic recovery, the modernization of the association agreement between Chile and the European Union, the development of clean renewable energy and the fight against climate change.

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, held a video conference with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. The conference focused on the fight against COVID-19 and the vaccination process; the development of clean renewable energy and green hydrogen; climate change; environmental protection; economic recovery and the protection of democracy. 

Regarding the pandemic, the two leaders discussed the progress of the vaccination process in Chile and Germany. They shared experiences and analyzed the possibilities of furthering cooperation between experts of the two countries. 

President Piñera and Chancellor Merkel also addressed the modernization of the trade agreement between Chile and the European Union, the country’s third-largest trade partner, emphasizing Germany’s commitment to supporting an agreement in the negotiations. 

The two leaders also analyzed development and investment opportunities in clean renewable energies, particularly green hydrogen, where Chile has considerable advantages and opportunities. Their implementation would allow significant progress to be made on environmental protection and the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Green hydrogen is one of the most innovative areas of the Chile-Germany bilateral agenda. 

The two leaders spoke for an hour. The President expressed appreciation for the German Chancellor’s work on development, unity and peace in Germany, Europe and the world during her 16-year administration. At the end of the conversation, President Piñera once again invited the German Chancellor to visit Chilean Patagonia when her term ends, recalling Chancellor Merkel’s heartfelt desire to visit the area.
