President Piñera highlights the importance of multilateralism and increased integration for addressing global challenges

President Piñera participated in the Leaders’ Roundtable at the “The Belt and Road” forum in China, where heads of state discussed how to enhance connectivity in order to explore new sources of growth.

President Sebastián Piñera, speaking on Saturday, advocated multilateralism, connectivity among countries and greater interaction in order to seek out solutions to major global challenges such as population aging and climate change.

During his second presentation at the “Belt and Road” forum, President Piñera emphasized that all initiatives should be inclusive and should reach those with fewer opportunities, and that a special effort must be made to include the disadvantaged in the new technological revolution.

He spoke highly of the forum, which featured the participation of around 40 heads of state with the goal of revitalizing the continuous flow of capital, goods and services between Asia and the rest of the world, promoting market integration and forging new bonds between communities.

He also thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for promoting the initiative and noted that he has welcomed Chile’s willingness to engage in free trade and to promote connectivity between countries.

President Piñera reiterated that Chile is hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum this year, as well as COP 25, the world’s largest climate change summit. The country has set ambitious goals such as de-carbonizing the energy matrix and has made important progress in areas like increasing the surface area of the country’s forests.

The Chilean President’s tour of China will continue with a visit to the city of Shenzhen, where he will meet with the representatives of technology firms.
