President Piñera calls for the UN to be modernized: "At times like these, the values we share as an international community must enlighten our behavior"

On the 75th anniversary of the organization, President Piñera called for it to recover its ability to prevent crises and strengthen institutions within member states, for the reform of the Security Council and progress with its programs, such as nuclear disarmament and combating terrorism.

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, this Monday made a call for the United Nations to be modernized so it can address the challenges of the future.

“It is precisely at times like these that the values we share as an international community must guide and enlighten our behavior," said the President in a telematic address to a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the UN.

The President called for it to recover its ability to prevent crises and strengthen institutions within member states, with the aim of building democratic resilience and reforming the Security Council.

He also called for more determined progress on programs such as nuclear disarmament, combating terrorism, mitigating the threat of climate change and global warming, improving access to healthcare, education, jobs, housing and potable water, and regulating migration.

“All these challenges require multilateral solutions, which are no longer optional but a necessity," said the President.
