President Piñera calls for an end to the trade war at the G20 summit: "The time for talking is over and we need to take action"

The President stressed that the summit of world leaders in Osaka, Japan, provides an opportunity to "take a leap forward" and end protectionism, which is damaging economies, trade and investment around the world.

President Sebastián Piñera made a call at the G20 summit on Friday to put an end to the tariff war and foster fair and transparent rules to boost global trade.

"The whole world is asking for this trade war to end," the President said in a statement to the press after his speech at the forum, which was attended by the leaders of the 20 largest economic powers.

"The time for talking is over and we need to take action," added the President of Chile. He continued, "I hope that this G20 summit represents a great opportunity to take a leap forward."

The President, who was accompanied by First Lady Cecilia Morel, was one of the speakers at the first plenary session of the G20 summit and, in the presence of the leaders of the United States and China, he denounced the protectionism that is damaging economies, trade and investment.

"It is very important to end this trade war that is undermining the global economy, and is seriously affecting international trade, thus harming all the countries of the world," he said.

The President also participated in a side event of leaders on the digital economy and in the second session of the G20 summit, where issues related to innovation and artificial intelligence were discussed.

For the second consecutive year and for the third time ever, Chile was an invited country to the G20 summit, because it is the country organizing APEC this year.

On Saturday, the President will take part in an event of Leaders on Women's Economic Empowerment and in the sessions on the promotion of a sustainable world, climate change, the environment and energy. Before returning to Santiago, the President of Chile will travel to the city of Hiroshima, where he will visit the Peace Memorial and will meet with Mayor Kazumi Matsui.
