President Piñera announces green hydrogen project at international Global Citizen festival: “We must abandon our dependence on carbon-emitting fuels, using the technology of tomorrow”

At the mega event, where various world leaders participate and announce measures to defend the planet, Chile’s President highlighted the development of green hydrogen in the country.

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, this Sunday announced the construction of the first green hydrogen plant in the country’s extreme south.

The President made the announcement at the 24-hour mega event: Global Citizen LIVE. The internationally-streamed event includes dozens of artists, activists, business leaders, philanthropists and world leaders, who unite to defend the planet and beat poverty in support of the “Global Citizen: A Recovery Plan for the World” campaign.

“The world cannot be allowed to continue down the same path. We must abandon our dependence on carbon-emitting fuels, and we must do it today, using the energy of tomorrow, green hydrogen,” President Piñera stated in a live-streamed speech.

It is hoped that the project will lay the groundwork for the world’s first green hydrogen plant. Once fully functioning during the next year, it will produce climate-friendly synthetic fuel that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100,000 tons each year. The plant will use the strong winds of Chile’s Magallanes Region to generate carbon-neutral fuel.

The plant will have a production capacity of 350 tons of methane and 130,000 liters of gasoline per year. It will have a useful life of approximately 25 years from the moment it begins operating.

“Together, we can defend the planet. We are all global citizens,” President Piñera concluded.
