President Piñera and China’s Foreign Affairs Minister discuss trade, investment and the situation of Venezuela at a meeting at La Moneda Palace

During the meeting, they also confirmed that China and Chile will work together on the organization of the APEC and COP25 meetings, which will be held at the end of the year in Santiago.

President Sebastián Piñera met with Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi on Saturday to discuss the importance of free trade and the need to strengthen the WTO and multilateralism and end the tariff war.

The President, who was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Teodoro Ribera, stated that it is important to increase the exchange of goods, services and investments. 
 
He explained that Chile will soon begin the process of laying fiber optic cable to Asia and will implement 5G technology, which will place the country at the cutting edge of technological development.

In both cases, there will be transparent public tender processes and companies from around the world will be invited to bid for them.

China is Chile’s foremost trading partner, and participates in 27.8% of all trade globally. In 2018, trade grew 24% to US$42.791 billion.

During the meeting, President Piñera and Foreign Affairs Minister Yi also confirmed that China and Chile will work together on the organization of the APEC and COP25 meetings, which will be held at the end of the year in Santiago.
 
President Piñera expressed his concern over the regional impact of the situation in Venezuela, which has become a humanitarian crisis, and asked that China help find a solution.

Chile and China are close to celebrating 50 years of friendship and deep, fruitful relations. The countries have expressed their willingness to continue to develop their bonds of friendship and strengthen their collaboration. 

The strategic collaboration agreement on science, innovation and technology reached with the city of Shenzhen, a national leader in technology, is one concrete expression of the countries’ joint efforts.
