President Boric in the Coquimbo Region: “We aren’t going to leave them to manage alone; we know there are complex problems and we’re working hard to alleviate their needs”

On the first day of his regional tour, the President spoke with food stall owners, toured the San Pablo Hospital and led a regional cabinet meeting.

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric Font, together with Irina Karamanos, traveled this afternoon to the Coquimbo Region as part of their first regional tour and to announce the inclusive recovery plan Chile Apoya (Chile Supports).

In the day’s first activity, the President led a regional cabinet meeting, accompanied by Governor Krist Naranjo, Presidential Delegate Rubén Quezada, and regional secretaries. They addressed important issues for the region, such as widespread water scarcity, transportation and housing.

The President also discussed Chile Apoya initiatives with local authorities. Speaking after the meeting, he stated “those who live in the Coquimbo Region should know that we aren’t going to leave them to manage alone; we know there are complex problems and we’re working hard to alleviate their needs”.

After the meeting, the delegation moved on to the San Pablo Hospital, where, alongside Coquimbo Mayor Marcelo Pereira, they were shown how the hyperbaric chamber works – an apparatus that allows staff to treat emergencies resulting from immersion – and visited the Child-Adolescent Mental Health Unit.

During this visit, President Boric highlighted the daily work that hospital workers carry out, and thanked them “for their dedication to public service.” He added, “we cannot confront mental health issues only from a pathological perspective. We need to instill a mental health logic in all our ministries. Every part of society should be concerned about mental health”.

In the day’s final activity, the President spoke with food stall owners in La Beterana restaurant, together with its owner Carolina Pizarro and Mayor Pereira.

The meeting offered an opportunity to reinforce the government’s commitment to all Chileans, above all “the small-scale entrepreneurs, especially those from the tourism and food sector, which has been one of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic,” the President stated. He stressed that he understands just how complex it us and how much “effort is involved in starting up a SME and a business. Usually it isn’t just the work of one person but rather a family effort that provides work and generates movement. When it receives a blow, ultimately Chile does too”.
