President announces tax relief for Coquimbo Region due to drought

The tax relief measures announced by President Boric are part of a decree that considers the drought and state of catastrophe in the Coquimbo Region.

The Los Pelambres mining company’s desalination plant in the Coquimbo Region was inaugurated last Thursday in an event led by President Gabriel Boric.

“I am convinced that this private endeavor is aligned with our government’s conviction to move towards productive activities that are environmentally sustainable and committed to the social development of the communities in which they are inserted,” Gabriel Boric, President of Chile.

Antofagasta Minerals made the decision to build the desalination plant in 2015 in order to forestall the effects of climate change in the area, which have caused one of the most serious droughts on record in recent years.

At the inauguration, President Boric announced tax relief measures for the region.

What does the tax relief for the Coquimbo Region consist of?

The tax relief measures announced by President Boric are part of a decree that considers the drought and state of catastrophe in the Coquimbo Region.

The decree with tax relief measures for the Coquimbo Region includes:

  • Deferral of tax payments and waiving of taxes for late payment on all rural properties.
  • Suspension of auctions of these properties.
  • Extension of payment of mining licenses for small-scale and artisanal miners for concessions equal to or less than 100 hectares (247 acres).

The president also referred to the bill submitted to Parliament that modifies the sectoral permit system: “I am optimistic that we will be able to carry out this project that we hope will allow us to reduce the period for obtaining permits to carry out important works by approximately 30%, without lowering the environmental standard.”
