New electric double-decker buses that will operate in the RED Movilidad system are unveiled

The new buses have 70 seats and a total capacity of 97 passengers. They are scheduled to begin operating in October.

The good news continues to arrive for public transport in Chile. The ten new electric double-decker buses that will operate in Santiago’s public transport system, RED Movilidad, were unveiled today.

The buses were presented by Transport Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz, who highlighted the importance of incorporating buses of this type in order to improve standards and offer quality service to users.

The minister explained that currently two out of three RED Movilidad buses are of a high standard. 31% of the fleet’s buses are electric, and equipped with security cameras, air conditioning, universal accessibility, USB ports and Wi-Fi.

The buses are not the only new addition to the system. We have also received another 146 single-decker buses, which will be joined by a further shipment to arrive this year. This means that we will close 2023 with almost 2,400 electric buses.

Features of the double-decker buses

  • They are scheduled to begin operating in October, and will be run by Metbus.
  • The buses are 12 meters long and 2.55 meters wide, and have two passenger doors.
  • They have 70 seats and total capacity of 97 passengers.
  • They take between 1.5 and 2 hours to fully charge, and have air conditioning, security cameras, USB ports and Wi-Fi.
  • Together with the 10 double-decker buses, another 146 BYD B series units of 12 meters in length have arrived.
  • London, Mexico City, Singapore and Hong Kong are just some of the cities in which this type of bus currently operates for transporting passengers in urban areas.
