Minute-by-minute: President Bachelet’s State Visit to the Philippines and her participation in the APEC Leaders’ Summit, as it happened

The 23rd APEC International Summit was held in the capital of the Philippines, Manila.

Sunday, 15 November

The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila where she began a State Visit to the Philippines. Subsequently, the President participated in the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting.

Monday, 16 November

President Bachelet, accompanied by the Chilean delegation, laid a wreath at the Monument for José Rizal, an intellectual and one of the most important patriotic heroes of the Philippines, along with Andrés Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo.

During the ceremony, the President was welcomed by the mayor of Manila, Joseph Ejercito-Estrada, and received the Key to the City.

President Bachelet, accompanied by the Chilean delegation, participated in the official welcome ceremony at the Malacañang Presidential Palace, where she was greeted by Benigno Aquino III, President of the Philippines.
During the ceremony, the President of Chile received military honors, inspected the guard of honor and joined in the singing of both national anthems.

After the official welcome at the Malacañang Palace in Manila, President Bachelet, accompanied by her Philippine counterpart, Benigno Aquino III, signed the Book of Honor to record her Official State Visit to the Government House of this Asian nation.

In the Music Room of Malacañang Palace, President Bachelet held a meeting with her Philippine counterpart, Benigno Aquino III, as part of her State Visit to this country.

Following a meeting in the Music Room of Malacañang Palace, President Michelle Bachelet and President Benigno Aquino III moved to the Aguinaldo State Dining Room where they presided over a meeting with the delegations of both countries.

At the agreement-signing ceremony, the two presidents signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation with regard to responding to emergency situations and natural disasters and a Letter of Intent to jointly assess the possibility of signing a trade agreement between the two countries.

At Rizal Hall of Malacañang Palace, the President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, offered a lunch in honor of President Michelle Bachelet, as part of her State Visit.

At the APEC Business Leaders’ Summit, President Bachelet stated that the biggest challenge for Latin America is to reduce the inequalities that make our region the most unequal in the world, which is fundamental to maintaining stable democracies.

Tuesday, 17 November

As part of her State Visit to the Philippines, the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, participated in a breakfast with women leaders from different backgrounds of this Southeast Asian island nation.

“I am convinced that, if we have a presence in the spheres of power and decision-making, we will have better opportunities to influence and promote the necessary transformation of law and practice,” stated the President during her participation in the Women’s Summit of the Philippines held during the APEC Summit.

The President of Chile met with her counterpart from Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, in the Sanpaguita Salon of the Manila Hotel, in the Philippines.

Wednesday, 18 November

The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, took part in the breakfast for Women Leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, organized by the Women in Parliaments Global Forum.

The President took part in the dialogue of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) along with leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.

During the meeting, APEC leaders received the ABAC Report and then participated in group discussions. President Bachelet joined group 4 along with representatives of Japan, Singapore and Papua New Guinea.

President Bachelet participated in a lunch meeting with leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum who have recently sealed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, accompanied by the Chilean delegation, attended the gala dinner offered by the President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, in honor of the APEC leaders.

Thursday, 19 November

President Michelle Bachelet started the day by participating in the Official Photograph that brought together the leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum. The activity took place at the PICC in Manila, the Philippines, the island nation where the 23rd APEC Summit was held.
Leaders’ retreat during 23rd APEC Summit

As part of the 23rd APEC Summit, which took place in Manila, the Philippines, President Michelle Bachelet participated in Retreat 1, held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in the presence of other leaders. The topic discussed was “Inclusive Growth Through Integrated Economies.”
