Formula E signs agreement with Environment Ministry to be a zero emissions and zero waste event

The goal is for it to be the first major sporting event that does not generate emissions and to reduce the amount of waste generated by attendees to zero.

Environment Minister Carolina Schmidt, Formula E Director Alberto Long and Race Ambassador Eliseo Salazar have signed an agreement that states that, in addition to being a zero emissions event, the race will be a zero waste sporting event beginning in 2020.

The initiative focuses on specific actions that reduce waste so that, in addition to promoting electromobility and the use of clean energy, the race includes a circular energy logic in its operations while offering an environmental education message to its audience.

Environment Minister Carolina Schmidt said that “it is important that this event raise issues such as oil consumption reduction, the move towards more environmentally friendly transportation and progress towards a circular economy in addition to being a sports competition.”

She added that, “In the context of COP25, this year we will intensify our partnerships with various sectors to generate measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.”

The agreement sets out specific commitments for the 2020 version of the race. These include the use of tickets made of sustainable material, coordinating sales or providing a reusable cup, eliminating all single-use plastics such as straws, cups, plates and forks, installing clean points for trash, classifying waste separately so that it can be recycled and refining cooking oils at food stands so that it can be used as a biofuel.
