Find out more about the highest-risk active volcanoes in Chile

Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) has published an updated list in 2023 following three years of work: there are 14 volcanoes classified as category 1.

In order to provide information on the highest-risk active volcanoes in Chile,  Sernageomin published an updated ranking which quantifies and assesses the eruption risk and current implications of volcanoes located throughout the country.

This initiative, which took three years to complete, was carried out by Chile’s National Volcanic Surveillance Network (RNVV) and classified 14 volcanoes as category 1.

The main changes compared to the last report (2020) include the incorporation of four additional volcanoes: the Llizán volcanic field (Los Ríos Region); and Penguin Island, Paulet Island, and the Orca Seamount (Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctic Territory). Similarly, seven volcanoes were eliminated due to being considered dormant or uncertainty of volcanic activity.

Additionally, four volcanic systems (Descabezado Grande and Descabezado Chico, Cerro Azul-Quizapu and Cerro del Medio) were grouped under the Maule Region’s Descabezado volcanic field.

Finally, the new ranking provides a list of “potentially active” volcanoes. That is, volcanic systems that are not currently included, but may be included in the future in accordance with new studies and/or information.
