Figures from the Responsible Pet Ownership Program

On Friday, August 28 in Melipilla, the government launched the second stage of the National Sterilization Plan, which is part of the Responsible Pet Ownership Program. 123 municipalities across Chile are participating in the plan.

The undersecretary of Regional Development, Ricardo Cifuentes, said the program represents “an historic effort by the government, which is addressing the problem of irresponsible pet owners for the first time.”

These are the figures from the first stage and the goals for the future:

57,100 sterilizations

were performed in the first stage of the plan, meeting the target for the initial phase. This figure includes sterilizations of cats and dogs, both male and female, regardless of whether they have an owner.

160,000 sterilizations

is the target by the end of the year.

190 municipalities

throughout Chile have committed to reaching this number.

2.757 billion pesos

are being transferred from the Subsecretariat for Regional Development (SUBDERE) to the various municipalities for sterilization efforts.

650,000 sterilizations

is the overall goal for the plan, which will end in December 2017. That number will include every municipality in Chile.

The Program operates under an agreement between SUBDERE and each municipality, whereby SUBDERE assigns funds to implement the Plan. In the first stage, 1,162,955,700 Chilean pesos were allocated for sterilizations and in the second stage the amount will be de 1,594,590,236 Chilean pesos.
