Chile will host leading international summit on clean energy technologies and innovation

The 12th annual Clean Energy Ministerial Meeting (CEM12) and Mission Innovation 6 (MI6) hosted by Chile will address this year’s key social, economic and climate challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic and during the economic recovery.

Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet announced this week that Chile will host the CEM12 MI6 virtual meeting, a global forum for the Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation organizations, from May 31 to June 6, 2021. As a virtual meeting it will thus reach a wider audience than before and a more diverse group of stakeholders. On the agenda at this year’s event will be the social, economic and climate change challenges that must be addressed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and during the economic recovery.

The CEM12 MI6 will bring together global leaders, ministers from member countries and observers from both organizations representing the world’s major economies and a select group of smaller countries that are leaders in clean energy technologies.

Minister Jobet said: “Climate change continues to be our greatest threat in recent times and it is vital that we work closely together in a coordinated manner to mitigate it. CEM and MI members are committed to global energy transitioning where the role of clean energy technologies will be foremost and irreplaceable. We are proud that Chile will host the global forum for the development of new technologies resulting in new solutions for the good of the planet, the inhabitants of today and for future generations.”

Chile’s Energy Minister also explained that this event will be key in addressing the challenges of clean energy prior to COP26 and added that “it will be the opportunity to reconnect, consolidate partnerships, reaffirm agreements and achieve momentum for a sustainable recovery.”

“Our aim is to foster and strengthen cooperation between the world’s major economies, the private sector and international organizations and in so doing extend the reach of forward-leaning climate change action plans. It is vital that we share lessons learned and best practice strategies as well as involving new stakeholders in the discussion,” he concluded.

This summit will be held in two parts that will take place concurrently. The first is the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) meeting, a high-level global forum that aims to promote policies and programs that expand the deployment of clean energy technologies. The second event, Mission Innovation (MI), seeks to accelerate innovation in clean energy technologies worldwide, through investment in research. It also seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy security and create new opportunities for clean economic growth.
