Chile to host the next edition of the world’s most important conference on climate change

Chilean Environment Minister Carolina Schmidt has announced that Chile will be hosting COP25, a two-week conference that will bring together Ministers and Presidents from 197 countries. “This is an enormous challenge that we are taking on as a historic milestone that will enable us to continue our progress towards sustainable development and our commitment to the environment,” said Minister Schmidt.

The eyes of the world will be on Chile after our country was unanimously chosen to organize the next United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP), the world’s most important climate change summit that brings together senior representatives from 197 countries.

“Chile is to host COP25. “This is an enormous challenge that we are taking on as a historic milestone that will enable us to continue our progress towards sustainable development and our commitment to the environment,” said Minister Schmidt, speaking from Poland, where COP24 is coming to a close.

She added, “Chile is an example of a country that believes that true development can only be achieved by protecting the environment and our planet and keeping our growth sustainable. We are going to use all our strength and humility to show the world what we can do.”

The Chilean delegation, led by Minister Schmidt, had an intense schedule in Katowice, Poland, as it gathered support from world leaders, reinforcing the message that Chile was the best option for the next COP. Several other Latin American countries vied to host the conference after Brazil withdrew its offer.

The two-week conference will take place in December 2019 or January 2020.

The decision by the COP plenary ratified the world’s positive perception of Chile’s efforts to address climate change. Chile was the first developing country to submit its Third Biennial Update Report on Climate Change, which includes the national greenhouse gas emissions inventory between 1990 and 2016. Also, in an unprecedented move for a Chilean minister, Minister Schmidt was appointed to lead global negotiations for the carbon market.
