Children’s dental health program: Sembrando Sonrisas (Sowing Smiles)

Preventing dental caries and promoting good oral hygiene and dietary habits in preschool children is the aim of the Sembrando Sonrisas dental health program which was launched today by President Bachelet. This year more than 210,000 children will benefit from the program.

What does the program involve?

The program involves a dental health check-up, oral health education, toothbrushing technique advice, free toothbrushes and toothpaste and a twice yearly application of Fluoride Varnish.

Who will benefit?

All children aged from 2 years old to 5 years and 11 months old who attend public preschools and childcare centers operated by JUNJI (National Association of Childcare Centers) and the Fundación INTEGRA, in addition to children at municipal and state-subsidized private schools.

What coverage will the program have?

The target is to treat 400,000 children by the end of President Bachelet’s term in office (2018). It is anticipated that 40% of this target will be achieved this year (160,000 children).

During the first quarter of 2015 the program was launched in 1,467 educational establishments (public preschools and municipal schools) throughout Chile in 326 municipal districts that are taking part in the program.
