Antarctic Policy Council approves the 2021-2025 Antarctic Strategic Plan

The plan includes 103 projects and concrete measures designed to meet the provisions of the National Antarctic Policy, approved in March last year. The plan highlights the renovation of the scientific bases operated by the Chilean Antarctic Institute, continued progress in the installation of the Climate Change Observatory and the remodeling of the Eduardo Frei Montalva and the Arturo Prat bases, among other things.

The Antarctic Policy Council, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Andrés Allamand, has approved the 2021-2025 Antarctic Strategic Plan, within the framework of the National Antarctic Policy that came into effect last March.

Minister Allamand explained that the plan, which will be in force for the next five years, contains 103 concrete projects, ‘mandated as a coordinated endeavor between different public bodies.”

The consolidation of the International Antarctic Center and progress in the installation of the Climate Change Observatory stand out among the initiatives to be implemented, which will allow for increased international cooperation and the strengthening of Chile’s commitment to the white continent.

The plan also includes the renovation of the scientific bases operated by the Chilean Antarctic Institute and the organization of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) meeting to be held in Chile in 2024.

Finally, the plan proposes to further diplomatic and scientific efforts for the approval of the Domain 1 Marine Protected Area, to establish a Chilean Antarctic month and to include themes concerned with the Antarctic in the Education Ministry’s study plans, among other things.
