World Tourism Day: Chile sets historic record this year
World Tourism Day has been celebrated since 1980 to commemorate the statutes adopted in 1970, which laid the foundations for the creation of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) five years later.
World Tourism Day is celebrated every September 27, a date that raises awareness of this economic sector and calls the international community’s attention to its enormous social, cultural and economic value.
World Tourism Day has been celebrated since 1980 to commemorate the statutes adopted in 1970, which laid the foundations for the creation of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) five years later.
The motto of World Tourism Day this 2024 is “Tourism and Peace”, which encompasses two extremely important themes:
- Tourism as a bridge for spreading understanding, cooperation, tolerance and respect among all nations.
- Peace as a means to ensure that people can fully develop in a positive environment, where they can live in harmony with other individuals.
World Tourism Day 2024 is a call to action for the international community, governments, institutions, key tourism stakeholders, trade associations, entrepreneurs, businesspersons, citizens and all those who are part of the tourism production chain.
Data on tourism in Chile
Tourism is one of the main economic drivers of Chile.
So far this year, we have received almost three million foreign tourists.
The figures show that the tourism sector is recovering. This year, we have surpassed the number of tourists there were prior to the pandemic.
In July 2024, we achieved a historic record for the number of foreign tourist arrivals, led by Brazilians.
More than 625,000 people work in activities related to tourism in Chile.
We have worked on airport improvements and opened 11 new air routes.
