President Piñera intensifies call to improve global coordination against pandemics: “We must strengthen multilateral institutions”

At a meeting of the XXVII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Andorra, President Piñera said that “we need a new agreement to help us better address and overcome the pandemics we will face in the future.”

On Tuesday, the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, intensified a call to improve global coordination against pandemics.

“We need a new agreement to help us better address and overcome the pandemics we will face in the future,” said the President, who participated in the online forum together with other Heads of State from France, Costa Rica, Portugal, Spain and Andorra.

At the meeting, the President emphasized that “if the different states had collaborated, shared efforts and information, and had adopted measures with the same speed and conviction as the scientific community did, there is no doubt the situation today would be much better.”

“It is important to recognize that we have not been able to guarantee an efficient distribution of vaccines in a timely and equitable manner. And as long as we are not all safe, no one will be completely safe,” he added.

The blended online, in-person event was a prelude to the XXVII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which is to be held on April 21. The meeting was attended by the presidents of Andorra, Xavier Espot; Spain, Pedro Sánchez; France, Emmanuel Macron; and Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado; and the Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa.

King Phillip VI of Spain and the presidents of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa; the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader; and Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, were also present.
