President Piñera promotes modernization between Chile and the European Union during visit to Spain

During the bilateral meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the President addressed the importance of promoting investments, fostering exports, and deepening Chile’s trade relationship with Spain and the European Union.

President Sebastián Piñera met with his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sánchez, on Tuesday, as part of his tour of Europe. President Piñera highlighted the importance of strengthening commercial ties between the two countries and said that Spanish investment in Chile will be encouraged.

During the meeting in the Palace of Moncloa in Madrid, President Piñera thanked Spain for the support that it has provided for talks on modernizing the trade agreement between Chile and the European Union.

The two leaders also signed a memorandum of understanding and collaboration on cybersecurity, which the two had begun to address during Prime Minister Sánchez’s visit to Chile in August.

President Piñera said that an agreement to promote exports and the internationalization of small and medium businesses is coming to fruition and that an effort is being made to promote mobility for young people so that they can study and work abroad.

“We are very proud of our origins and the relationship that we have with Spain,” the President said. The President also attended a dinner with Prime Minister Sánchez.

Earlier, President Piñera met with King Felipe VI and participated in a forum in which he highlighted the dynamism of Chile’s economy and outlined the reforms that he is introducing in order to promote investment and productivity.

On Wednesday, President Piñera will travel to Germany, where he is scheduled to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble.
