President Piñera launches works to extend Line 3 of the Santiago Metro

The works include three new stations that will reach the center of the Quilicura neighborhood, benefitting close to 210,000 people. The construction, along with the extension of Line 2, entails an investment of US$855 million.

President Sebastián Piñera launched this Tuesday the extension works of Metro Line 3, which includes 3.8 km of tracks and three stations. This will reduce travel times and improve the quality of life of Quilicura’s residents.

"We’re creating a network that integrates, that is joining forces to integrate all Chileans, to improve their quality of life,” said the President at a ceremony where he launched the excavation work of the future Line 3 terminal station, during which he joined with neighbors from the community.

The new stations will enter into service in 2022. Once inaugurated, travel times between the stations of Universidad de Chile and Plaza Quilicura will take 20 minutes, a 60% decrease in the time it presently takes.

"It will be a much safer, predictable and reliable system, of more service to the people and of greater quality. This is what all the people of Chile want and deserve,” stated the President, who was accompanied by Transport Minister Gloria Hutt.

The Line 3 extension is part of the investment plan of the Santiago Metro, which includes the extension of Line 2, entailing a joint investment of US$855 million.

The President also highlighted the new transportation system “Red” (Network), which will incorporate metro lines, electric buses and other means of transportation such as bicycles, thus raising the standard of the service. “This revolution in the public transport system will be extended to each and every one of our country’s regions,” said President Piñera.
