President Piñera announces agreement with Moderna for two million vaccines to guarantee a fourth dose for everyone in Chile

The vaccines will arrive in Chile in three shipments over the coming months, to be used in the Government’s vaccination process. During the event, the President highlighted the anticipated progress of fourth-dose COVID-19 vaccination.

Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera announced on Monday morning a new agreement to acquire two million doses of the Moderna mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines will guarantee a fourth dose for everyone in Chile.

“We are getting a head start and talking with laboratories so that, if necessary, all Chileans will be able to get all useful, efficient and necessary vaccines,” the President stated during a visit to the El Rodeo Vaccination Center. He was accompanied by Acting Health Minister María Teresa Valenzuela and Lo Barnechea Mayor Cristóbal Lira.

According to recent studies, the Moderna vaccine has shown excellent global results. This latest agreement adds to Chile’s successful Coronavirus vaccination process. The two million doses will arrive in Chile in three shipments over the coming months.

Almost 90% of the country’s population has been vaccinated with the primary vaccination scheme to date, and more than 60% have received a booster shot.

“Once again, we ask those who have not been vaccinated, which some weeks ago totaled 3.3 million and are now around 1 million, to get vaccinated. Do it for yourselves, do it for your families, do it for your communities, do it for your workmates, do it for your country,” the President reiterated.

The fourth dose COVID-19 vaccination process began on Monday, January 10, 2022, with immunocompromised people who received their last dose before September 12, 2021. The goal is to maintain immunity levels among the vaccinated population.

According to the vaccination calendar, the vaccination of healthcare workers began between January 20 and 23, 2022. Between January 24 and 30, it was the turn of healthcare workers who received their last booster shot before September 26, 2021.

The process will continue from the week of February 7 for all those over 55 years of age who received their first booster shot before August 15, 2021.

“The joint effort of everyone has allowed us to save many lives, and that is the most gratifying feeling we can have in this fight against the Coronavirus pandemic,” President Piñera concluded.
