The project adds four new stops and will benefit 617,000 people in La Cisterna, El Bosque and San Bernardo. The Metro will now reach the latter two municipalities for the first time.

President Gabriel Boric was accompanied by the Transport Minister, Juan Carlos Muñoz, when he participated in energizing the tracks to drive the first train along the Santiago Metro Line 2 extension.

This significant transportation milestone is good news that will benefit 617,000 people in the municipalities of La Cisterna, El Bosque and San Bernardo. The latter two will receive this service for the first time, which will rapidly connect them with Huechuraba, Recoleta, Santiago, San Miguel and La Cisterna.

The Line 2 extension requires an investment of US$409 million and will add 5.2 kilometers to the network underneath Padre Hurtado Avenue with four new stations called El Bosque, Observatorio, Copa Lo Martínez and El Pino.

This extension will generate 4,400 jobs from construction right through to commissioning, which is scheduled for the third quarter of 2023.

President Gabriel Boric mentioned that "This project is the outcome of the State’s commitment. I would to like to emphasize that these major infrastructure projects require a long-term vision (...) We are talking about specific projects that improve our quality of life, which we are achieving with various mobility projects, for example, the train that will connect Greater Valparaíso with Greater Santiago".

The President added that "El Bosque and San Bernardo will have Metro stations for the first time, thanks to this extension project. Line 2 will span Greater Santiago from Huechuraba to San Bernardo".

"The trip from El Pino to Los Héroes currently takes up to an hour, but will now take 24 minutes. How does this improve your quality of life? (...) You will have more time to share with your family," he explained.
