President signs decree to establish new Extreme Zones Development Policy

The ceremony took place during the President’s tour to the Aysén Region, and fulfils a commitment that he made in May 2022.

Chile’s President, Gabriel Boric Font, signed the decree to create a new special Extreme Zones Development Policy during the first day of his tour in the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region. The policy will replace the Special Extreme Zones Development Plans, approved in 2014.

The President explained that the goal “is to establish the Extreme Zones Development Plan as a permanent policy of the Chilean State, which doesn’t have a set duration of three years and doesn’t depend on the incumbent government.”

The President said that this new policy “means connecting the region physically, virtually and internally with the rest of Chile and the world, promoting its territorial development and national and international insertion, consolidating the infrastructure to enable the development of human settlements, strengthening the regional productive system by applying and adapting instruments for development and legal measures for growth, improving the equal access of men and women to the social services we have already detailed, such as health, education and housing, and protecting Aysén’s environmental and cultural heritage.”

The new Extreme Zones Development Policy is currently being processed and will be submitted to the Comptroller’s Office this week for confirmation, and subsequent publication and dissemination.

The President also announced that more regions are to be added to this strategy. “I want the inhabitants of the Aysén, Arica and Parinacota, and Magallanes regions, as well as Palena Province – and we are also talking with the Governor to include Tarapacá and Antofagasta – to know that there will be a different policy for the most isolated places in Chile.”

“I want to tell the citizens of Aysén that they are also important, we are also thinking about them and working for them, not with a centralist vision, but alongside this tremendous team; and also with the Regional Governor, Andrea Macías, with whom we have an excellent collaborative relationship (…) Regardless of where they live, whether in a port, a fishing village, on a small island or in a remote town in this beautiful region, they are a priority for this Government,” President Gabriel Boric Font concluded.

This Wednesday, the President also met with Regional Governor Andrea Macías, Presidential Delegate Rodrigo Araya and the ten mayors of the region, as well as chairing a regional cabinet meeting. Public Works Minister Juan Carlos García, Regional Development Undersecretary Nicolás Cataldo and Healthcare Networks Undersecretary Fernando Araos also participated in these meetings.
