President Gabriel Boric receives proposal for new constitution and calls for national plebiscite

The president, together with Interior Minister Carolina Tohá and Minister Secretary General of the Presidency Álvaro Elizalde, signed a decree calling for a national plebiscite on December 17.

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric Font, participated in the closing session of the Constitutional Convention, held this Tuesday in the Hall of Honor of the National Congress in Santiago.

During the ceremony, he received the proposal for the constitutional text. He then made a speech and, together with Interior and Public Security Minister Carolina Tohá and Minister Secretary General of the Presidency Álvaro Elizalde, signed a decree calling for a national plebiscite on December 17.

During the event, the president emphasized that “our main responsibility as a government, and mine in particular as president of Chile and all Chileans, is that the people can express themselves with complete freedom in the plebiscite this December 17.”

“This implies generating the conditions for an electoral process that is unobjectionable and expeditious, as is our democratic tradition of which we are deeply proud. At the same time, our compatriots should have the necessary information to be able to make a serious and responsible decision, always thinking about what is best for our shared homeland,” he added.

“I am optimistic about Chile and its future, and I know that if we persevere, we will be able to find sooner rather than later the necessary agreements to be able to build a country that is shared and more united. Beyond our differences, we all know that we must work towards that, to row in the same direction,” Gabriel Boric, President of Chile.

The president also stressed that “Chile is facing a key moment to define its future. And, in the event that the proposal that they have given us today for a new constitution is approved, there is no doubt that we as a government will fully comply to correctly implement and install it. Additionally, as appropriate, alongside other state bodies, we will take charge of the process of legal reform and regulatory adaptation that will be required.”

Furthermore, he stated, “if, on the other hand, this proposal is rejected, our government will dedicate itself, without pause and with great energy, to continue working and governing for the well-being of the people, responding with a sense of urgency to the social demands that people ask of us, and that are now our compatriots’ main concerns.”
