President Gabriel Boric Font participated in the 50th anniversary of Salvador Allende’s speech given to the United Nations Assembly

The activity included the presence of the former president’s family members, heads of state and a musical presentation by the Folklore Orchestra of the Municipality of La Pintana.

As part of the 50th anniversary of Salvador Allende Gossens’ speech at the United Nations, the governments of Chile and Spain, through their respective permanent missions to the UN, organized an intimate ceremony to mark this milestone, which was held at the Cervantes Institute with a presentation from Chilean-Argentine playwright Ariel Dorfman.

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric Font, also made a speech to those in attendance, along with Chilean Senator Isabel Allende and the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez.

During his presentation, President Boric spoke of the historical importance of Allende. “We should not see him as a static figure, but rather as an idea, an idea that adapts to the times, an idea that inspires, an idea that it is current because it changes.” He added that “I think that, too, is a lesson. The principles remain the same, but the paths we take will undoubtedly need to adapt to the circumstances we are living in.”

President Boric also highlighted that “the validity of Salvador Allende’s thinking lies in the consistency of his actions and, as I said before, in his unwavering democratic conviction. And today we have a duty to embody these principles in each of our actions because the temptation to follow other paths is very easy, as we can see in nearby countries.”

Also present at the activity was Marcia Tambutti Allende, president of the Salvador Allende Foundation and director of the documentary “Beyond my grandfather Allende.” Other authorities in attendance included the President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, and the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa.

The ceremony featured a musical performance by the La Pintana Youth Orchestra, organized by the La Pintana Cultural Corporation. This artistic and social project engages young musicians from the municipality in music through instrumental study, and their appearance at the event was their first performance outside Chile.
