Chile’s President Gabriel Boric Font announces ratification process for ILO Convention 176

The President commemorated National Miner’s Day alongside Labor Minister Jeannette Jara, Mining Minister Marcela Hernando and Foreign Affairs Minister Antonia Urrejola.

From Los Naranjos Patio in La Moneda Palace, Chile’s President Gabriel Boric Font announced this Wednesday the beginning of the process for Chile to ratify the International Labor Organization Convention 176.

The convention on health and safety in mines is a transcendental international treaty for strengthening the rights of mining workers. It focuses in particular on the right to consultation and participation in the health and safety measures that apply to the risks present in the industry.

The President said that, “the conviction of protecting our miners, our mining workers, is a long-held tradition; we are not inventing it.” He added, “during the ratification process for 176, we will have a national policy on health and safety in mines, so that the families of miners can also be at ease.”

Representatives from the Federación Minera de Chile, the Federación de supervisores de la Minería privada de Chile, the Confederación Minera de Chile, the Confederación de Trabajadores del Cobre, the Federación de Supervisores del Cobre, the Federación de Sindicatos de Antofagasta Minerals, and the Federación de Trabajadores del Cobre participated in the event.

At the end of the ceremony, an official photograph was taken.
