On Monday, President Sebastián Piñera led the inauguration of the 10th Citizen Security Week organized by the Interior Ministry and Inter-American Development Bank.

Speaking before representatives from countries across the region, the President outlined the progress made by his administration with regard to citizen security, which includes the deployment of more police officers, the development of major operations to combat crime, improved coordination between security forces and reforms designed to modernize institutions and improve gun control.

“One of the things our citizens most demand is to be able to live more peacefully and with greater security and tranquility. It is therefore the primary responsibility of any government to provide our people with that greater security, peace and tranquility. We have taken on this mission with great determination, commitment and a sense of urgency,” President Piñera said.

The President also referred to the 2018 statistics presented by Fundación Paz Ciudadana, which suggest that the victimization rate, which measures the percentage of households that have been impacted by a crime within a given period,  has dropped from 39.5% to 36.4%. This decrease was also reflected in the index that measures the percentage of families who live in fear of crime, which decreased from 16.6% to 10.4%.

“Our administration is absolutely committed to public order, citizen security, respect for the rule of law, and the peace, security and tranquility of our people,” the President concluded.
