President Piñera participates in commemoration of Mercosur’s 30th anniversary

The President attended the videoconference of leaders together with the presidents of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia.  He expressed his appreciation for the progress that has been made with the creation of the trade bloc and urged for greater connectivity and integration between member nations.

On Friday, President Sebastián Piñera participated in the act commemorating the 30 years since the creation of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).

The President highlighted the commercial importance that this integration process has meant for Chile, underlining that currently, it is the fourth largest trading partner in Chile as well as the main destination for foreign investments, totaling over US$55 billion.

Additionally, President Piñera called for greater integration between members of Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance through the advancement of projects like the Bi-Oceanic Corridor and the implementation of a transpacific cable allowing for improvement in connectivity throughout the entire continent.

Finally, the President called for a united response to the challenge of overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession, in addition to demonstrating greater interest in addressing issues of climate change.  

Other participants in the meeting were the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, the President of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, the President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou and the President of Bolivia, Luis Arce.
