President Piñera meets with top US COVID-19 advisor Anthony Fauci

The meeting is part of a series of high-level encounters between President Piñera and international experts from Germany, the United Kingdom and the European Commission designed to provide opportunities to share experiences and information and coordinate collaborative actions in response to the pandemic.

President of Chile Sebastián Piñera met via videoconference Thursday with the top US COVID-19 advisor, epidemiologist Anthony Fauci. They discussed the measures that Chile and the US have taken to control the pandemic.
 
During the meeting, President Piñera and Dr. Fauci concurred on the need to make progress on vaccination as the best approach to preventing new variants and serious cases of the disease.
 
In the context of efforts to update the Step by Step program, Chile’s successful vaccination plan was highlighted along with the country’s strict public health protocols.
 
President Piñera and Dr. Fauci agreed to maintain fluid and ongoing communications between the Chilean and US governments so that they can share information and experiences with COVID-19.
 
The President attended the meeting with Health Minister Enrique Paris, Public Health Undersecretary Paula Daza, Health Care Networks Undersecretary Alberto Dougnac and advisor Rafael Araos.
 
The videoconference with Dr. Fauci is part of a series of meetings that President Piñera has held with leaders and specialists in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week he met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel; lead medical advisors in the United Kingdom, Sir Patrick Vallance, the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government of the United Kingdom, Dr. Jonathan Van-Tam, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England, and Dr. Susan Hopkins, a medical expert and advisor to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; and German virologist and advisor to the European Commission on COVID-19, Dr. Christian Drosten.
 
On Friday, the President will meet via videoconference with the Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Dr. Andrea Ammon.
