President Piñera marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Our commitment is also expressed by strengthening democracy, institutions and freedoms.”

The President unveiled a commemorative plaque at Plaza de la Constitución in downtown Santiago. “In order to build that freer, fairer, more unified and more developed country to which we are all committed, we need everyone,” added the President.

On Monday, President Sebastián Piñera led a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and unveiled a memorial plaque at Plaza de la Constitución in downtown Santiago.

The President emphasized the administration’s commitment to promoting and defending the rights of society’s most vulnerable groups, including children and young people, Chileans living in poverty, the sick, the differently abled and indigenous peoples.

“To all of them, we say loud and clear: our administration is not going to forget you or leave you behind. It will not exclude you because, in order to build that freer, fairer, more unified and more developed country to which we are all committed, we need everyone” said the President. He was accompanied by First Lady Cecilia Morel, Justice and Human Rights Minister, Hernán Larraín and representatives from social organizations.

“Our commitment to human rights is also expressed by strengthening democracy,” said the President at Plaza de la Constitución. He added, “This is a commitment that is going to enable everyone to collaborate in making Chile a more humane country. A humane country respects human dignity and therefore fully and absolutely respects human rights.”

At the center of Plaza de la Constitución, the President unveiled a plaque inscribed with part of article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
