President Piñera highlights agreements on trade, defense and the environment in meeting with President Macron

The two Presidents met in the Élysée Palace and also agreed to increase collaboration on the development of clean energies and the fight against climate change.

President Sebastián Piñera met with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on Monday. During the meeting, the leaders agreed to expand trade relations between Chile and the European Union and to jointly promote clean energy projects and work on defense and cybersecurity matters.

During the meeting, which was held in the Élysée Palace in Paris as part of President Piñera’s tour of Europe, the Presidents discussed how Chile and France can lead the effort to achieve a cleaner, more sustainable planet.

“I believe that this meeting has resulted in a new roadmap for relations between Chile and France, with specific objectives, dates, agreed upon routes and a purpose: to allow our country to develop more quickly and with greater depth and to create more jobs, improve salaries and generate more opportunities,” President Piñera said to the French and Chilean press after the one-hour meeting, which was also attended by First Lady Cecilia Morel and Foreign Affairs Minister Roberto Ampuero.

France is one of Chile’s main trade allies in Europe and the two countries also share a long tradition of working together and cooperating in diverse areas, like science, education, culture, defense, gender and innovation.

During his visit, President Piñera visited the business incubator Station F, presented his education agenda to the UNESCO General Conference and met with Senate President Gerard Larcher.

“We feel that this has been a very good visit. I’m pleased with the meeting with President Macron. We agree on many issues and I know that we have a lot of work to do together,” he stated.

The President traveled on to Spain, where he will meet with King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
