Streets without Violence Plan launched in Santiago: These are the details

The strategy consists of a coordinated police intervention between the Government, Carabineros (uniformed police service), PDI (investigative police service) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to confront crime in the municipalities with the highest concentration of serious crime.

Interior Minister Carolina Tohá, together with Interior Undersecretary Manuel Monsalve, Minister Secretary General of the Government Camila Vallejo and Crime Prevention Undersecretary Eduardo Vergara, launched the Streets without Violence Plan. The plan will confront crime in the municipalities with the highest concentration of serious crime, through coordinated work with the police.

The coordinated plan between the Government, Carabineros (uniformed police service), Policía de Investigaciones (investigative police service, PDI) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office aims for effective criminal prosecution, greater police patrols, control of offences and public disorder, and community intervention and the recovery of public space.

Details

The Streets without Violence Plan includes regional and municipal interventions in municipalities with the highest concentration of serious crimes, especially homicides with the use of firearms. It has been designed as a specific intervention strategy for each territory based on coordinated work.

How many municipalities does the plan cover in the Metropolitan Region and throughout Chile?

46 municipalities at the national level and 22 in the Metropolitan Region, where it aims for effective police patrols and the control of offences and public disorder. At the regional level, it aims for effective criminal prosecution.

How were the priority municipalities defined?

Two criteria were defined to select the priority municipalities during the first stage:

The plan will be carried out in 22 of the 52 municipalities in the Metropolitan Region, covering 64% of the regional population (8,310,984 people).
