Energy Ministry and Nuevo Pudahuel Airport launch plan to receive and supply green hydrogen-powered planes from 2030

Chile’s National Green Hydrogen Strategy (Estrategia Nacional de Hidrógeno Verde) proposes that the maritime and air transport sectors can be decarbonized using hydrogen-derived fuels, in both local and international routes.

Energy and Mining Biminister Juan Carlos Jobet and Nuevo Pudahuel General Manager Xavier Lortat-Jacob announced a plan this Tuesday morning to make Santiago’s airport the first in Latin America capable of receiving and supplying green hydrogen-powered planes from 2030.

The energy minister emphasized that air transport is one of the most polluting sectors in the world, making this a key measure in Chile’s plan to become a greener and less polluting country. “With this announcement, airlines operating in Chile will be able to use green hydrogen when transporting passengers and cargo, helping us take a step towards becoming more environmentally friendly.”

As Chile keeps developing its green hydrogen industry, the plan follows the great news that was made public in our country a couple of weeks ago, where the first green hydrogen molecule was produced for mining. It accompanied the announcement that this green fuel will be injected into the country’s household gas network.

Chile’s National Green Hydrogen Strategy proposes that the maritime and air transport sectors can be decarbonized using hydrogen-derived fuels, in both local and international routes.

This initiative is in line with a global plan spearheaded by Nuevo Pudahuel investors, VINCI Concessions and Groupe ADP, which seeks to incorporate this energy in airports around the world during this decade. “We’re working to implement sustainable biofuels for airplanes, a system that is already being used in London’s Gatwick Airport, operated by VINCI Airports. This is crucial if Chile wants to become a leader in green hydrogen. Once again, we’ve demonstrated that we’re the best partners in air transport, not only in terms of connectivity, but also in promoting new fuels like green hydrogen, which will be as significant to Chile’s future as copper is today,” stated Nuevo Pudahuel General Manager Xavier Lortat-Jacob.
