At a meeting with Minister Allamand: Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister supports closing the last round of negotiations on modernizing the Association Agreement between Chile and the European Union

“We value the Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister’s support of the process of modernizing the Association Agreement between the EU and Chile. It is a great step in strengthening bilateral relations and projections for working together,” said Minister Allamand.

This Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Andrés Allamand continued the meetings scheduled as part of his European tour. The meeting with the Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Belgium, Sophie Wilmes, was a highlight.

At the meeting, the Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister supported the momentum behind the Association Agreement between Chile and the European Union. In that context, and given the shared sustainable development ambitions, both reaffirmed their desire to wrap up negotiations soon.

Of particular interest to the Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister was green hydrogen diplomacy. Chile enjoys a leadership position that will enable it to become a cornerstone in research and development of the ‘fuel of the future’. Green hydrogen is a clean energy source for advancing toward carbon neutrality. The Foreign Affairs Ministers also agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on Antarctic issues.

The authorities also agreed to continue exploring economic and investment opportunities between Chile and Belgium. They also addressed the political situation in their countries. Minister Allamand presented the main advances in the constitutional process in Chile.

During the morning, the Chilean Foreign Affairs Minister met with a group of representatives from the European Parliament. He addressed the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, projections for the relationship between the EU and Chile, and progress on the final stage of negotiations for modernizing the Association Agreement between Chile and Europe.

In the afternoon, Minister Allamand travelled to Paris and met with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian, at the end of the day.
