On International Day Against Climate Change, learn about eight measures that we have promoted to care for the environment

Our commitment to be the first green government in Chile’s history has not just been all talk, as we have carried out a series of actions to protect our environmental heritage.

1. The Escazú Agreement was approved by Congress

The Senate approved our country joining the first unprecedented environmental treaty. The agreement aims to guarantee the full and effective implementation of the right of access to environmental information, participation and justice.

2. We announced the creation of the Desierto Florido National Park

On National Environment Day, President Gabriel Boric announced that this new ecological reserve would be located to the south of Copiapó. It will protect the amazing flowering phenomenon that covers the Atacama Desert with color, where you can enjoy more than 200 plant species.

3. We began closing down operations at CODELCO’s Ventanas foundry.

We want the fair socio-ecological recovery of territories affected by pollution; that is why we announced the closure of operations at this foundry. The measure aims to put an end to the constant cases of intoxication that for years have affected the populations of Quintero and Puchuncaví, especially children.

4. 6,000 hectares of native forest are being restored

We are restoring 6,000 hectares (14,800 acres) of native forest throughout Chile, generating 6,500 new direct jobs and adding an additional line of nurseries with a majority of female employees.

5. We have had our first Climate Change Framework Law since June

Chile has its first Climate Change Framework Law for the care of the environment. It sets the goal for the country to be carbon neutral and climate resilient by no later than 2050, and establishes concrete actions for 17 ministries.

6. 19 new urban wetlands have been declared since March 11

The protected biodiversity sites help in flood control and climate change mitigation.

7. The solid biofuels project is already law

The regulations are aimed at reducing pollution in southern Chile by moving towards a formal market for firewood and improving the quality of pellet fuels. The provision is part of a package of energy measures promoted by the government; it is also part of the Chile Apoya (Chile Supports) program.

8. Paving left over in construction work at Antofagasta airport to be reused

The paving will be used at the emergency hospital facility in Mejillones.
