Security laws: Government enacts four anti-crime measures

The new initiatives enacted by the Government aim to strengthen the fight against crime and provide greater protection to the police. 

Chile’s Government, led by President Gabriel Boric, has enacted four laws related to security that aim to strengthen the fight against crime and provide greater protection to the police. 

Security laws enacted this morning 

The laws to strengthen security throughout the country that have been signed by the president are: 

  • Law 21.560 to strengthen and protect the exercise of the Chilean police and Prison Service, known as the Naín-Retamal Law. 
  • Law 21.555 to reinforce the powers of the Prison Service and create the crime of extorsion. 
  • Law 21.557 to modify the criminal code to increase the penalty for the crime of kidnapping. 
  • Law 21.556 to increase the penalty for the crime of carrying weapons in highly-crowded places.
