MARCH 6, 2015

From today: Free entry to museums operated by the Chilean Libraries, Archives and Museums Board (Dibam)

A total of 26 museums from Antofagasta to Magallanes will abolish entry charges from this month in a move aimed at making museums more accessible and fostering greater appreciation for Chile’s heritage.

“Chile needs to make sure that more people can learn about our heritage, history and science without restriction, through the network of state-run museums – the custodians of our culture and our identity,” highlighted President Michelle Bachelet at the reopening of Chile’s second oldest museum, the Natural History Museum in Valparaíso, in November last year.

From March 3, 2015, millions of people throughout Chile will benefit from free admission to museums operated by the Libraries, Archives and Museums Board (Dibam).

The decision to abolish admission charges affects 26 Dibam museums in 13 of Chile’s regions from Antofagasta to Magallanes. The director of Dibam, Ángel Cabeza, explained that “this new chapter for Dibam museums is aimed at strengthening relationships with the public and because we do not want anyone to be excluded from learning about their heritage.”
