Dialogues for decent pensions: We are opening up spaces for participation to build a pension reform with a focus on social security

The “Social Dialogues for Decent Pensions” began this Wednesday, as spaces for tripartite participation between the government, workers’ representatives and employers. The aim is to listen to concerns regarding the current pension system and proposals for what is required to improve it.

The social dialogues kicked off today to create a pension reform proposal. The dialogues are spaces of tripartite participation between the government, workers’ representatives, led by the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) and employers, represented by the Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC). The launch was led by President Gabriel Boric, Labor and Social Security Minister Jeannette Jara, and the director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Fabio Bertranou.

In his speech, the President stated, “we have the obligation to reach a national, cross-sector agreement on social security.” He further stressed the importance for this process to consider workers, employers and the state.

“Not only are tripartite agreements of urgent importance for us to construct a new social security system, they are also imperative in a society that requires us to urgently address people’s most pressing problems. As well as being tripartite, I hope the dialogue will be equal, because it’s women who are most affected today and experience a larger gap in terms of social security. We still have a lot of work to do here as a society,” President Boric said.

The social dialogues for pension reform will take place throughout Chile and will be led by the Regional Secretaries (SEREMI) of the Labor and Social Security Ministry in each region. They will also be accompanied by representatives of the ILO and the Higher Labor Council. The process and the results will be systematized with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).

In parallel to the social dialogues, Technical Consultations will take place and any organization that is not represented in the tripartite dialogues will have the opportunity to participate in bilateral meetings with the Labor SEREMI, which will collect their documents and proposals and they will make up part of the regional report.
